Mayor, Pedro Hernandez Mateo welcomed the Councillor for Tourism, Belén Juste on her first visit to the Tourist Information and Visitor Centre at Alto de la Casilla, which was recently recognized with the distinctive quality ‘Q’ honour for Tourism. The Mayor and the Councillor held a short Plaque ceremony followed by a tour of the facility and meeting the staff. Along with Tourism, the offices also offer services for film production and location scouting though a link up with the Alicante film studios. Belén Juste continued her tour of Torrevieja with a visit to the CdT centre to sample the delights of the gastronomic department where she presented the campaign “Conoce lo nuestro”, with the objective to promote knowledge of regional cuisine throughout the Community. In the last decade, Torrevieja has been at the forefront of one of the most aggressive education building programs in Spain. The city has almost doubled in size over this time frame and the latest development phases were visited by the Councilor for Education, Alejandro Font de Mora. The mayor and Snr. Font de Mora revealed another plaque before taking a tour of public school No. 10 "Habaneras ", which is located on a plot of 14,000 m2 in Delfina Viudes Avenue, close to the Water Park. The school received an investment of 5,992,733 euros, has nine pre-school classrooms, 18 elementary classes, gymnasium, dining and housing for the caretaker with a capacity for 675 students, offering small class sizes of just 25-students each. Font de Mora highlighted the school’s modern facilities and the fact that Torrevieja is one of the few cities in the Valencian Community that next year will have an additional capacity for additional students, should the city experience another period of growth. The minister and the mayor also took the opportunity to visit the final school that is part of the ‘Plan de Infraestructuras Escolares 1996-2003’, Public School No. 11 "Ciudad del Mar", which is being built on a plot close to the old Bullring in the Aguas Nevas. The plot is13,500 m2 and will have similar characteristics to Habaneras. It is being built with a budget of 5,724,423 euros and expected to be operational for the 2010-2011 academic year. Torrevieja’s mayor was keen to point out that older schools in the city are also receiving upgrades along with other educational investment in the Conservatory of Music and Dance, Mariners College, Sailing School, initiatives at the Sports City Complex plus special classes offered in arts and culture through the many organisations that the Town Hall supports.
