School Orchestra delights for AFA
This young Orchestra was formed 25 years ago and has gone from strength to strength over the years
AFA were the beneficiaries of a superb jazz performance put on by a Cornish Secondary school on Sunday August 1st. Playing to an audience that almost filled the Municipal Theatre, the ‘Helston School Jazz Orchestra’ amazed the mostly expatriate audience with their talent and sound, proving beyond doubt that they deserve the title of one of the very best school jazz band in the UK.This young Orchestra was formed 25 years ago and has gone from strength to strength over the years, especially when one considers that the oldest member of the group is 19 and the youngest just 14. From their opening, toe tapping rendition of the Glenn Miller classic American patrol, through the jazz fusion of Miles Davies, jazz virtuoso such as Andrómeda to four part harmony singing of Taking a Chance on You, their entire performance delighted the audience from start to finish, followed by two encores. Not bad for a group of youngsters who just a few hours earlier had been splashing around in the hotel pool for most of the day!
Pedro Valero, councillor for Foreigners and New Techology said a few words of thanks along with members from AFA Torrevieja. Another extraordinary fact was that, after the concert they sold a record 68 CDs of their music, adding a further 68 euros to the pot for AFA, more than tripling the best ever CD sales of any other artist doing it for charity at the municipal Theatre. A magnificent performance by a very professional and talented group of youngsters.
