If you’’ve ever walked along the Paseo Vista Alegre in Torrevieja and wondered what the Fountain is all about at it’s southern end, close to Eras de al Sal, all will be explained later this month when Torrevieja’s International Habaneras y Polifonía competition opens its doors on July 23rd.

For over 100 years Torrevieja has had close ties with Cuba, exporting salt to the island and returning with spices, Caribbean delights and, of course, tobacco! Over the years, a singing style developed called Habaneras, which is celebrated annually as a competition in the historic Eras de la Sal. The fountain contains a series of freezes depicting the story of trade and the music influences that are associated with the city.

This year sees choirs from all five continents competing for prizes, national TV coverage provided by TVE2 and local highlights from TVT and Costa Blanca TV, on the Internet also enhance the name of Torrevieja as a cultural city throughout the world.

All of the shows start at 2300 each night and the series of concerts run from July 23rd through to the 30th.
