BOXING WBC TITLE FIGHT COMES TO TORREVIEJA

The sports palace, Torrevieja, Friday 15th June 2007, is the venue of championship boxing when the WBC light welterweight (Mediterranean Division) title belt will be contested.

This is the first time Torrevieja will have hosted such a title fight and is testament to the dedication of the local promoter Ulf Johannsen in his quest to bring top level boxing to the area.

The contenders for the belt are

Geir Inge Jorgensen, from Norway. Aged 28 he has a world ranking of 166 and has an impressive 24 fights, with 23 wins of which 9 were by way of knock out. He is a powerful boxer who has fought in Torrevieja on previous occasions.

His opponent

Fabrice Colombel, from France. Aged 32 he normally boxes at welterweight and has a world ranking of 466 with 37 fights, 20 wins of which 13 were by way of knock out.

The fight is scheduled for 12 x 3 minute rounds and is the top of the bill event. It’s likely to be a display of powerful boxing.

The support card consists of a further 3 professional fights and 5 amateur fights which includes 2 lads from Dublin, (the first time boxers from Ireland have flown over to this region to participate in such an event), and 4 from London. Local boxer Emiliano Casal will also be fighting after his return from injury.

The event starts at 9pm with doors opening 1 hr earlier.
