FC Torrevieja’s players have something to smile about at long last. The new management team from SAMM Inc has announced that all players shall receive all wages in full for their services within the next three weeks, with wages for 2009 already paid out. Director of Football, Tommy Taylor, and club treasurer, Jefferson Scott, met with the squad to tell them the latest news. Taylor said that the players were “happy and delighted with the news”, and that “they were looking forward to continue to give their best for the remaining matches of the season”.The original plan was to pay the players in full by February 5th but because of the necessary ‘due diligence’ being carried out and pure logistics, this payment period has been staggered over the month of February. Paying the players, management and creditors has been the number one priority of SAMM Inc since they became involved with the club early in 2010 and so far they have been working hard to turn the team and the system around from one in freefall to one looking at the prospects of promotion.
The changes are coming hard and fast at Torrevieja with one of Taylor’s main concerns being the team’s lack of fitness and pace up front. A new training regime shall be implemented very soon and Taylor is already scouting and holding trials of new players, not just from SAMM Inc football academy in Africa but also from around the Alicante/Murcia region and from the UK. This is to strengthen the existing squad who lost a number of quality players at the end of 2009, primarily due to wage concerns.
With close ties to West Ham United and Aston Villa, amongst others, talk on the terraces is all about future possibilities and signings, rather than dwelling on the financial problems of the past 18-months. The club have a new Media and PR guy in the guise of former BBC Radio broadcaster and current TKO Gold presenter Alex Trelinski and SAMM Inc are already looking at ways to improve the stadium facilities, entertainment, match atmosphere, event management, marketing and sponsorship opportunities for the club.
One can never say that life is dull at FC Torrevieja and those thinking of going to see them play away from home this weekend should make a note that the game has been brought forward to a 1700 hrs kick off on Saturday, 13th September in CATARROJA, a mere 200 kms and 2hr 15 minute drive away from Torrevieja! Please note that because it is a Saturday kick off that coach travel is not available.
