FC Torrevieja return to winning ways
FC Torrevieja 2-0 Crevillente
FC TORREVIEJA returned to their winning ways on Sunday, again showing just some of their unrealised potential against local rivals Crevillente, coming out two-nil winners in a game they could have won by six! Having led the league table last month, Torry went into this fixture in eighth place with the win placing them ten points behind the leaders but on ly three points adrift of the top four. However, the manner of the win was far from convincing, with squandered chances, unprofessional conduct leading to a dismissal and continued worries about why the team has lost its pizzazz.
The first half was a bit of a non-event with the visitors managing just a couple of shots on goal and although Torrevieja had much of the play, they seemed lost as to what they should do with the ball to any real pressure on their weaker opposition to convert their possession into goals! Ramiro continued to lead the charge as the second half commenced controlling a long ball in one touch before crossing with precision on to the head of Carrasco, who steered his attempt directly to the keeper. With only a few minutes on the second half clock, Ramiro was at his creative best again, this time delivering to the advancing Juande who nodded home to give Torry a well deserved lead.
On the hour Torry wrapped the game up with the best move of the match. Corella forced his way forward on the left, then cut inside and deceived the Crevillente defence with a precise pass to Petu. The Torry hit man made no mistake this time and with the Crevillente defence wrong footed, he pulled to his left and tapped the ball into the gaping net. He almost made it three just four minutes later when he made a smart dash down the right hand channel and was rewarded with an early ball, allowing him a free shot on target, which he missed by inches, burying the ball in the side netting.
Then Torry made life hard for themselves. Juande was fouled whilst on the attack, but the referee clearly indicated an advantage for them and gestured to play on, however Juande still on his backside, said something abusive to the official who produced his red card and immediately dismissed him from the field of play. Torry’s ten men did what was required to hold on to their lead until the final whistle.
Torry move to 6th place with this victory, level on 22 points with fifth placed Villareal C, whom they meet this coming weekend. This is an acid test for the ambition and capability of the team, who will need to return to their best form and illustrate most emphatically that they are indeed one of the top teams in this group who are earnestly focussed on promotion. Torry's next home game will be on Sunday 30 October hosting Requena, with an 1800-hrs kick off.
Team: Cristian Méndez, Jorge, Cristian Muñoz, Diego Meijide, Cristian Vidal, Prior, Corella, Juande, Ramiro (Burguillos 77’), Carrasco (Manu 71’) Petu (Antón 84’).
