Positive news for FC Torrevieja

It’s been a tough couple of years at FC Torrevieja but many in the city are hopeful that 2010 shall be a turning point in the fortunes of the club.

On Monday evening, at a special meeting of the club’s socios, the vast majority passed a vote of confidence in the statement of intent that the New York based ‘Sports and Media Management’ group presented on their vision of the future of the club.

Having been let down in the past by major sponsors and the present financial crisis plunging the club into their own crisis state, in rode the cavalry in the shape of SaMM inc, to hopefully turn things around as fast as they possibly can. Presently they are going through the actions of due diligence with the club’s finances and the player contracts to avoid any future unpleasant surprises, with a promise to pay all back wages and outstanding debts by February 5th, 2010. They have already appointed former professional West Ham defender Tommy Taylor as Director of Football, who shall be working alongside manager Soto to establish a level of football guaranteed to please the loyal and valued FC Torrevieja fan base.

Last week, Tommy Taylor stated that the club were already on the lookout for at least six players to strengthen the squad and that they hoped to bring in some rising talent from Africa, Granada, the UK and local Spanish players, to give added strengh to the squad and start to fight for promotion as soon as possible. However, Peter Fulford, the Chief Operations Officer of SaMM inc stated that “FC Torrevieja is a Spanish football club and that will remain the case.”

The first items of major focus are to strengthen the first team squad, improve physical fitness, integration of the 2nd team with the first eleven, develop local grassroots and youth development structures, to implement local scouting and feeder club initiatives and build upon International Academy Partnerships, starting with a new elite academy in Torrevieja.

The medium to long-term vision for FC Torrevieja is to work with as many locally sourced players as possible in order to build a strong and sustainable team for the future. The ultimate goal (no pun intended) is of Torrevieja developing future home-grown stars of the ‘beautiful game’. Short term, the team needs to be strengthened as quickly as possible, probably from bringing in overseas players with the target of gaining promotion as fast as possible.

Fingers are crossed that Tommy Taylor can help to start to put all of the pieces together and hopefully FC Torrevieja and the faithful shall be on the Terraces cheering the team on to victory when the play-offs roll around in a couple of months time.
