Fire in Villamartin (video)

The fire started in the urbanizations of Villamartín and Los Dolses.

Last Sunday, at about 5pm, a fire started at a gully with difficult access in the urbanization of Villamartin, Orihuela Costa.

Fire alarm was given some minutes after five pm by a neighbour. Flames elevated quickly and firemen, just as a precautionary measure, advised the three nearest properties should be evacuated and requested the intervention of several air and land media.

The deployment of forces to control flames was spectacular. Over 50 firemen, two seaplanes and two helicopters took part on it.

All signs indicate it was a started fire.

These gullies are very typical in many urbanizations of Orihuela, and they cumulate many bushes during the winter months. When summer comes, bushes tend to dry up and any small lighten up waste may start a big fire.

Neighbours claim the area should be cleaned in order to avoid similar situations in the future.

At about 10pm, fire was extinguished.
The fire destroyed many adult pines and bushes.

I saw the smoke from my solarium in La Zenia and decided to drive towards it to see. It was around 5.30pm when I arrived and a good few people had already lined up along the road to see it. I filmed for awhile with my Xacti HD camcorder and got some nice looking video as I was quite close. I left around 6.40pm and had no idea that it took 12 hours to douse the area. Anyway, it was quite exciting to see the sea plane and helicopters. The siren from the sea plane was funny to hear :-)

hi there,
me and my friend were actually on the course when the fire broke out and like two hardy scotsmen we finished our round.
we only missed three holes the 12th 13th and 14th holes,
it was a little bit worrying that no-one from the course approached us to advise us whether to stop playing or not.
we took video of the planes coming in and the helicopter landed 100 yards from us.all very exciting stuff.
