International Petanca Competition
The fifth annual international Petanca competition in honour of the European Union will take place in the Jardin de las Naciones, Torrevieja, on Sunday 13th May.
Thirty-four teams from 14 countries will participate in this keenly fought all-day event. Here is an opportunity to show your support for your nation and turn out to cheer them on. This is one of Spain's most popular ball games that we have all seen people playing on the beaches, or in laid out rinks, or even on cleared unused sites. In this particular part there are several rinks and the teams will fight it out for most of the day.Spain will have four two-man (or mixed) teams, Sweden an other 4, England 4, Belgium 4, Norway 4, and France 2 teams, Germany 4, Finland 2. The other countries have only one pair: Italy, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Holland and Denmark. As can be seen this has now become a popular sport among expatriates of different countries.
This year the European Union is celebrating its 50th anniversary and the town hall are putting up four trophies for the winners. This is part of the annual European Cultural Week, which this year is spread over a six-week period with many concerts and other events lined up. This has become an event that many look forward to each year.
