The Moscow Ballet performs Swan Lake for two nights in Torrevieja

THE ESTEEMED Moscow Ballet will perform Swan Lake at the Teatro Municipal in Torrevieja for two nights on December 29 and 30, 2011, with the curtain up at 21.30-hrs. Romance, Beauty, Splendour and Grace are all on offer as one of the most celebrated Russian ballet companies performs Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s most beloved work Swan Lake. Tickets are on sale at a single price of €25.00 euros in Theatre box office and through ServiCAM.

This is a superb opportunity to see one of the world's most famous ballets perform on the local stage. A full-scale production set to the music of Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake is a romantic tale of true love and forgiveness taken from Russian folklore and German legend. This enchanting story follows a heroic young prince as he labours to free the beautiful swan maiden from an evil sorcerer’s spell. Filled with colourful costumes and backed by a sweeping score, Swan Lake is considered one of the greatest classical ballets of all time.

The ballet was premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet on March 4, 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, billed as The Lake of the Swans. Although it is presented in many different versions, most ballet companies base their stagings both choreographically and musically on the 1895 revival of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, first staged for the Imperial Ballet on January 15, 1895, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. For this revival, Tchaikovsky's score was revised by the St. Petersburg Imperial Theatre's chief conductor and composer Riccardo Drigo.

Founded in 1989 by choreographer and dancer Timur Fayziev, the Moscow Ballet boasts some of Russia's leading dancers and choreographers. Since its inception it has given more than one thousand performances and undertaken 60 world tours in countries like Japan, China, Taiwan, Italy, Switzerland, England and Spain. In 1991 the Company was chosen, by the great dancer Rudolf Nureyev, for his last European tour. The company’s wide repertoire includes pieces such as The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Midsummer Nights Dream and Swan Lake. Their latest productions have included Carmen, Don Quixote plus Romeo and Juliet.

The founder and director of The Moscow Ballet Timur Fayziev was born in 1953 and graduated from the Bolshoi Theatre Choreography School in Moscow in 1971. From then until 1991 he worked as a soloist at the Russian capital's prestigious 'Ballet Stanislasky - Nemirovich Danchenko' in roles such as The Firebird, Cinderella and Giselle. In 1978 he was invited by the famous choreographer Tom Chilling to work as a principal dancer in the 'Komiche Berlin Opera' and in 1983 became part of the Russian company 'Ballet Stars of Moscow', with which he toured for two years. In 1989, while still working as a soloist, he decided to found the company that is now visiting Torrevieja.

The international and prestige enjoyed by the Moscow Ballet has continued to grow over the years and such is their, reputation, rigor and professionalism, that in 1991 the Company was chosen by the great dancer Rudolf Nureyev for his last European tour.. It's latest productions have been Carmen, Don Quixote and Romeo and Juliet. The Moscow Ballet is one of Russia’s largest Ballet companies, performing throughout the world for more than 20 years. A wonderful opportunity to witness one of the world’s top Ballet companies, over two nights of glamour and glitz in Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre.
