Hot on the heels of the Tour of Spain coming through Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa this summer, Torrevieja is proud to have their own two-wheel Spanish Champion, albeit in a different cycling discipline. Local policeman Luis Alarcon was proclaimed champion of Spain in his Master 40 class of the Policia Local Mountain Bike Championship held on the1st and 2nd October in the Granada town of Motril. To celebrate his win, Alarcon was invited to Torrevieja’s Town Hall to sit with Torrevieja’s Councillor for Sports, Daniel Plaza, who congratulated him and expressed his pleasure that a member of the local police force should have such impressive athletes within their ranks.

There were also accolades for the local police cycling team, which was formed by Luis Alarcon, Francisco Martinez, Jose Angel Perez, Jose Manuel Ripoll, Domingo Zapata, and David Casares plus, least we forget lady rider Raquel Mateo who obtained a very creditable 4th place at national level, having competed 31 rounds in Spain. This fourteenth edition of the Mountain Bike Championship in Spain, involving a total of 243 agents and local police from 15 different provinces. The categories ranged from elite, Senior, Masters 30, Masters 35, Masters 40, Masters 45 and Master 50.

Luis Alarcon said that “The route was 44 miles long consisting of roads, paths and dirt roads with significant up and down slopes, making a tour that was quite fast and hard.” Neighbours Alicante obtained the second position, just behind the Polica Local from the Province of Murcia.
