MADRID AND BARCELONA OVERCOME BENIDORM IN HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS

Benidorm, continues leader of tourist cities of the sun and beach.

The jewel of the crown Benidorm, and its hotel plant, has stagnated. In the last years not only the construction of new establishments has been paralyzed but some of them, the most ancient of the city center, have closed. Madrid and Barcelona have made use of the organization of big events to give an impulse to the tourist sector with the creation of thousands of hotel rooms, a quantitative jump that has made Benidorm third place on the national classification roster that was the leader only three years ago.

According to the information of the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in September, 2007 Madrid had 67.135 spaces, Barcelona, 49.209 and Benidorm, 37.286. In this list, the population of Calvià (Palma) appears with 38.358 spaces, although this hotel is not stable, since in winter 8.000 of those available rooms are closed.

Nevertheless, Benidorm is still a leader between the tourist cities of sun and beach. In accordance to the statistics of the INE, Benidorm receives 48 % of the tourism of the Valencian Community.
