MOVE FOR THE RETURN OF THE ‘CORRIDA’ TO TORREVIEJA.

A group of local bullfight fans, led by Francisco Boj, the spokesman for ‘Plataforma Taurina de Torrevieja’, have formed a pressure group with a view to the return of bullfights to the resort.

Including matadors, journalists, supporters and representatives of such associations as the ‘Friends of the May Fair’, the ‘Virgen del Rocio’ or the ‘Casa de Andalucia’, the group aim to press for the recontruction of a bullring in Torrevieja which would also serve as a venue for other public events. Back in 1969, a bullring was inaugurated in Torrevieja where fans enjoyed top quality ‘corridas’ but, more recently, the facility was demolished to make way for a housing project. According to the former nationally acclaimed matador, torrevejense Joselito Paya, the demolishing of the bullring was “one of the saddest days for our town.” The ‘Plataforma Taurina de Torrevieja’ intend to solicit backing for their plans from local politicians.

Let's hope this does not happen.
A Torrevieja bull fight would not get the support that the Torrevieja futbol club does. Certainly not from the British.

If bull fighting returned to Torrevieja it will loose many of its tourists. One reason that I chose to live here was because it does not have a bullring and I hope it never does. I enjoy the Spanish culture without such cruelty.

Hope they will get a new bullring,
I was so sad to hear that they destroyed the old one.
I witnessed my first bullfight there when I was 4 years old in 1989, and I hope that the next time I return to Torrevieja I will be able to witness Spanish culture at its best yet again.

I personally don't like bullfighting.
But if the Spanish want it, in Spain, that is their choice. If foreigners like myself do not like it, that is our problem.
When will the British learn, that we cannot tell other people how to run their own countries.
If we don't like it, we can always leave.
Personally, I think that Spain is the most wonderful country and I love it here.

If anybody wants to witness animals being killed, I suggest they pay a trip to an abattoir. Please do not try and pass it off as sport (in any country).

Let the Spanish do what they want in their own country. I have seen a bullfight (a long time ago) and while I would never be a fan, I can see the attraction of watching courage being tested!

I don't think it is for tourists to decide about the Corrida. It is part of the Spanish culture and if you choose to live in Spain you have to accept parts of the culture that you don't agree with. I think it would be good to bring back a little more Spanishness to Torrevieja, there are so many tourists here I forget I'm even in Spain sometimes! Que vuelva la corrida!!

Que vuelva la corrida!

Yes, this is Spain and it is for the Spanish people to decide.
If you don't like the Spanish culture and their way of life, go back to where you came from, I can assure you, you will NOT be missed. Don't try and turn Spain into little Britain.
I came here to live with the Spanish people and enjoy their way of life and to get away from Ripoff UK.

If you live in Spain, you must respect Spanish traditions and culture. Nobody is forcing you to go to the bull fight, if you don't want to don't go simple choice - your choice !
I sincerley hope that ALL ex pats have learn't to speak the language and customs.
Viva Espana, viva la corrida !

two comments:

1. at recent bullfights in Madrid, there were substantial protests by Spanish people against the events and one fight was completely disrupted and cancelled. Not all Spanish are pro - bullfighting.

2. Sell your house - who are you kidding ? I have mine on the market undervalued at 150,000 and the best offer so far is 120,000 euros.

Rosalind does not speak on behalf of ALL British. We were at Torrevieja this year and were dismayed as a family that there was no Corrida. We saw our first fights last year in Torremelinos and were fascinated with the artistry and tradition involved. Remember the phrase "No Bullfight, No Bulls" unless of course you only want to see them in a Zoo. Long live the Corrida as far as we're concerned.

ALways an emotive subject but on balance I would vote for its return. It might be difficult of course as the mayor is openly anti and backs the "Torrevieja - una ciudad no taurina" campaign.

i dislike fox hunting. i detest deer hunting with hounds and i think bull fighting is even more detestable, but we are in spain and it is not up to we who are guests in spain to point the finger at the spanish when we are guilty of equal cruelty.9

I am all for corridas, this is Spain folks and if you dont like everything in their culture then tough go back to where you come from. The problem in the UK is because we have bowed down to what others want and not be british any more. Viva Espana

I agree with all the positive comments. If the local Spanish people want the corrida brought back, good luck to them. The British ex-pats shouldn't live in Spain if they don't like the culture. The bullfight is part of Spanish history and is pure theatre. If you don't like it, don't go.

right yeahh, im sick of people coming over to torrevieja thinkin that because there culture is different to the country there in they think its allright to come and change everyones views and opinions, if you dont like bullfighting you dont go and see it and you respect others cultures, views and opinions im not a fan of bullfighting but im also not a fan of people thinking its allright to post comments like the ones above and expecting people to agree with them, i agree with valerie allison (above) if you dont like 'las corridas' you dont go and you shut up if your coments or opinons arent going to be good about the spanish culture, opinions and history.. VIVAA ESPANA !

There are many things done to animals in Britain that are far more cruel than la corrida, and the British are supposed to love animals!!!
