Including matadors, journalists, supporters and representatives of such
associations as the ‘Friends of the May Fair’, the ‘Virgen del Rocio’
or the ‘Casa de Andalucia’, the group aim to press for the recontruction of
a bullring in Torrevieja which would also serve as a venue for other public
events. Back in 1969, a bullring was inaugurated in Torrevieja where fans
enjoyed top quality ‘corridas’ but, more recently, the facility was
demolished to make way for a housing project. According to the former
nationally acclaimed matador, torrevejense Joselito Paya, the demolishing of
the bullring was “one of the saddest days for our town.” The ‘Plataforma
Taurina de Torrevieja’ intend to solicit backing for their plans from local
politicians.
