ork begins STREET REDEVELOPMENT TORREVEJENSE ABSENT WITH AN INVESTMENT OF 663,184 EUROS

The centre of Torrevieja is receiving another facelift with work underway to reconfigure another downtown street into a semi-pedestrian zone, this time leading from the imposing Corazon Church at Plaza de Oriente, towards the seafront. Torrevieja’s Councillor for Infrastructure and Contracting, Javier Montoro said that “work on the redevelopment of the street Torrevejenses Ausentes had now begun, funded through an investment of €663,184, financed by the Generalitat Valenciana through the Special Plan for productive investment support of the Generalitat Valenciana (Plan Trust).”

The project has a five-month deadline, so it is expected to be finished prior to the Easter Semana Santa processions, in March 2012. This redevelopment project along Calle Torrevejenses Ausentes creates a direct link between Plaza de Oriente, from Calle Zoa and Maria Parodi to the Plaza Waldo Calero.

The main focus of the project is on sustainable mobility by providing another zone where pedestrians receive priority over traffic. Javier Montoro explained that the work involves improving the quality of the existing paving that is being replaced by granite pavement in 3 different colours; 2 shades of blue, gray and white. The project also includes the placement of street furniture such as bins, benches and bollards, landscaping and ornamental trees, new lighting, and new underground piping.

The street improvements will not be welcomed by everyone as the project and design calls for the elimination of parking spaces along the street, something that Torrevieja needs more of to help business in the town centre! As if Torrevieja does not have enough of them, soft speed bumps will be introduced in order to reduce the speed of vehicles travelling through this area.
