November 20 was not only Election Day in Torrevieja but for those who like to have a bit of a flutter, a typical image from Torrevieja was featured on the ONCE Lottery coupon. All of us have seen the OCEN sales people, in their offical booths, located at the side of the street or sitting outside major supermarkets around the city. ONCE (National Organization for the Blind) dedicated their November 20 Coupon to the Natural Park of Las Lagunas of La Mata and Torrevieja. The coupon was illustrated with a photograph of one of the lakes with an old barge full of salt.

A total of five million coupons carried the image and Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon, thanked ONCE for once again choosing an image of the City of Salt, for this very special Election Weekend coupon. Salvador Galvan, the President of ONCE in Alicante, said that “Torrevieja is emblematic and also has one of the most beautiful natural parks and attractions in Spain. In the park are some of the best pockets of dry and wet salt marsh vegetation in Valencia. Bird life has great relevance in the natural park, and nearly one-hundred species are located there.”

The director of ONCE in Torrevieja, Maria del Carmen Belmonte recalled that 71 vendors currently work with ONCE in Torrevieja and some border towns, such as Guardamar, San Miguel de Salinas, Montesinos and Pilar de la Horadada,, employing a total of 183 people. ONCE works hard to bring awareness to the plight of many of its members and has been particularly effective in promoting access for the blind and visually impaired, with aids to allow them to enjoy art and culture by adapting museums and natural areas, as well as collecting and analyzing information publications related to accessibility, besides participating in national and international meetings to be carried out with the same purpose, to facilitate access by new entrants to this field.
