Road safety awareness campaign for motorcyclists
The Spanish love riding on two wheels.
The downside is that the death toll for riders of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds does not make happy reading and so this week shall see a new road safety awareness campaign towards motorcyclists in the Province. The sub-delegate for the Government in Alicante, Encarna Llinares, said that the campaign is aimed towards the “increase in the inspections of these vehicles in all sorts of ways." In the previous motorcycle campaign, held from 4 to June 18, 2009, the Guardia Civil inspected 3485 bikes and issued 158 tickets. Of these, 42 were related to ITV, 28 for faulty overtaking, 13 non-use or misuse of indicators, six for speeding, three for alcohol-positive, four for lack of compulsory insurance and 6 referring to the driver or vehicle documentation, among other complaints.
"This is a special campaign," stated Llinares, who recalled that the Guardia Civil " perform checks continually throughout the year, mainly at weekends, on several roads in the province that see increased concentration of such vehicles to prevent accidents." Llinares stressed that the province of Alicante saw a significant decrease in the number of fatalities in the first five months of 2010 over the same period last year. From January to May, the number of deaths on the roads in the province was14, five fewer than the same months of 2009, representing a decrease of "26.3%".
Although this specific campaign is aimed specifically at Alicante, over the past few weeks, special Trafico vans have also been seen in and around Torrevieja and the Vega Baja operating spot checks and ITV tests on both cars and bikes, with a number of vehicles impounded because of incorrect documentation, ITV failure and other offences.
