Alimentos Solidarios Torrevieja have been in existence for about two-years and in that short time they have become a lifeline for poor and needy families in Torrevieja.

The Royal Naval Association’s Torrevieja Branch made a visit to this year’s winner of the prestigious Diego Ramirez award winners, Alimentos Solidarios, last week to present them with a donation in recognition for all the work the charity performs for needy families in the city. Each year, the RNA chooses three NGO’s, who share an equal donation for their cause. This year’s three charities that benefited were the Royal Naval Benevolent Fund, AFA Torrevieja and Alimentos Solidarios.

Alimentos Solidarios Torrevieja have been in existence for about two-years and in that short time they have become a lifeline for poor and needy families in Torrevieja. Their centre is located on the corner of Calle Apolo and San Pascual, just outside the city centre and are an independent social catering charity who provide daily cooked takeaway meals for local families, along with supplying them with such necessary items as non perishable foodstuffs, cooking oil, milk plus items for babies and children.

Members of the RNA Torrevieja Branch who visited the centre included RNA President Robin Hargreaves, Baz Winward, Terry Watson, Colin Holloway, birthday boy and entertainment director Dick Conway and Chairman of the Torrevieja Branch Mike Wright. The money raised by the RNA is simply through a couple of euros that members throw into a collection box after each meeting, which they divide up and donate each December.

Also on hand was Pat, the only English-speaking Volunteer, who works at the centre every Friday. Pat has a long history of NGO involvement from her days living in Wales and said that she has been there for about six-months and loves spending time at Alimentos Solidarios, meeting the people and learning more and more Spanish. Volunteers are always needed and anyone interested is very welcome to either contact Graham Knight at oari.torrevieja@gmail.com, or to drop into the centre in person.

Graham Knight, Director of the Foreign Residents Office was on hand to help with any translation needs and Maria del Carmen Mateo Bosch, Councillor for Health, Volunteers, ONG’s and Animal Centre represented the Town Hall. Chairman Mike Wright, presented a cheque for €305, to Centre Manager Antonio who proceeded to give a tour of the facility to the visitors. Every weekday, the centre provides hot meals for 150 families, upping that amount to 300-meals during this season and also supplying food for families to cook themselves during the weekend.
