Rugby returns to Torrevieja

Torrevieja Tigers Rugby Football Club are the city’s newest sports team.

 Based out of one of Spain’s most enviable municipal sporting facilities, the Nelson Mandela Stadium the new team are seeking all those with an interest in rugby to come and join them.The Tigers have the full backing of the Town Hall, and are now the official rugby team in town. The officially started training on Monday night and looking for players, officials, coaches, sponsors, media partners and support from anyone interested in the noble game of Rugby Union.

Ian Baker, the President of Torrevieja Tigers RFC said “Come along and be made welcome, meet the staff of the Tigers, ask questions and get to know the management. This year is going to be a good one for all the players. We were asked for matches so we have them. We were asked to be in a league; so we are. We have the under 18’s, 16’s, 14’s and 12’s plus let us not forget the ladies! We now have the Tigers rugby team in Torrevieja, so get ready for some superb rugby.” The senior team is one of four teams from the Valencian region expected to join with eight teams from Murcia to form a new league in the area. However, more details about the league formation, teams, features and schedules will not be announced until after an official meeting of the Rugby Board on September 3, 2011.

Everyone is invited to come along to a training session to find out what it is all about. The under 12’s, 14’s and Ladies train on Mondays and Wednesdays between 1700-1900-hrs, Tuesdays the Under 16’s and 18’s train from 1730 to 1930-hrs and Seniors from 1900-2100, Thursdays the Under 16 and 18 from 1700-1900 and on Fridays the Under 16 and 18 from 1830-2000-hrs and Seniors between1930-2100-hrs. Due to school finishing times, the Under 12 times may change, depending on the availability of players.

The squad is truly international and attracting players, coaches and others from outside Torrevieja, who are interested in becoming involved. At last week’s first informal meeting there were players and coaches from Spain, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Australia, Brazil, Columbia and Central America. Coaching session will be in English and Spanish and players of all ages are invited to attend any of the training sessions.
