Packed agenda of summer sports

Torrevieja´s new sports complex is just about ready to be fully opened for a summer full of activates and tournaments.

With grandstands build and turf laid, Torrevieja’s Mayor Perdo Hernandez Mateo has invited Nelson Mandela to the city to inaugurate the new Rugby facilities and has proposed that the Rugby stadium is named after the former political prisoner and activist. However, with the World Cup in South Africa just a few weeks away, chances are slim that Mr. Mandela will have time to make such a trip and the naming of the stadium is still awaiting approval.  

The Rugby facilities boast 3,000 covered seats and are sure to increase the numbers of those taking up the game in the city. The first tournament shall be a seven’s tournament held in June, while the new tennis, squash and paddle facilities also will feature local competitions in the near future. No excuses for not keeping yourself active this summer and plenty to keep the kids busy and away from the Playstation!

In June, apart from the School Olympics, there are 19 planned activities including swimming, water polo and indoor football, along with a major water polo tournament for the Valencian Community, the ‘Torneo de Waterpolo de la Generalitat’ at the Infanta Christina Pool. The new installations will be put to good use starting on June 18 and 19 when the afore mentioned ‘Torneo de Rugby Ciudad de Torrevieja’ will be held. Upon school closing for the summer, from June 23 to 27, 600 or more players have already registered to participate in the first ‘Torneo Torrevieja Cup 2010 de Fútbol Base’ which is for all players under 18 years including benjamín, alevín, infantile and cadete plus under13 and under 16 female teams.

As the temperatures rise in July, 17 activates are scheduled including a football training program, indoor football games, and the Third ‘Campus  Nacional de Gimnasia Rítmica ‘Jennifer Colino’, a rhythmic gymnastic tournament taking place in the Pabellón Cecilio Gallego from July 13 to 17.

Another 17 activities are planned for August starting on the 2nd with the  ‘XXVI Torneo de Fútbol Sala ‘La Mata’ in the Polideportivo de La Mata. Closer to the end of the month, on the 21st it’s the turn of handball with the ‘Torneo de Balonmano ‘Ciudad de Torrevieja’ in the Palacio  de los Deportes Infanta Cristina and for those with energy left, on August 28 and 29 in the Pabellón Cecilio Gallego there are 24-hours of football  with the ninth edition of  the Torneo de Fútbol Sala 24 horas.

No doubt other activities shall be added to the agenda, but in the meantime, certainly something for almost everyone with sports on their mind is on offer over the summer months in Torrevieja.
