The rescue of a dog

Mark took her to the local vet where she received treatment for the visible injuries.

This tiny Yorkshire Terrier was found at the side of a road suffering from shock and exhaustion, she also had injuries consistent with having been thrown from a moving car. Mark Lewis, a long term animal rescue and welfare protagonist, is an active member of the K9 Club animal charity  in La Marina and they took on the responsibility for this dog after her rescue. Mark took her to the local vet where she received treatment for the visible injuries; her age was believed to be nine to ten years.

She has a microchip with a registered owner in Madrid and her name on record is Luna. Telephone calls by the vet to both numbers on record were unsuccessful and the owners were not traced. Whilst recovering in a foster home her fosterer noticed that Luna was drinking a lot of water.

Another visit to the vet and a blood sample resulted in a positive test for diabetes, then it was discovered that she was totally blind in one eye and almost blind in the other eye.  Mark and her fosterer did not give up on Luna and she received all the loving care and treatment necessary to bring her back to relatively good health.

The only thing that Luna could not receive in Spain was vital surgery on her eye to improve the vision in that eye before it was too late. Her foster carer learned from the vet how to give Luna the necessary daily insulin injections, and she made contact with a friend in Germany, who, after seeing photos of Luna, agreed to adopt her and arrange for the surgery needed to save her eyesight which was possible from a specialist surgeon in Germany.

Luna was transported by air to her new home and soon after her arrival in Germany she received the vital surgery that she needed. The photo shows Mark Lewis with Luna’s new owner Melanie on a recent return visit to Spain. The great news is that the surgery was successful and Luna can see again.
