No matter what, it’s hard to ignore the fact that the World Cup is in full flight at the moment.

With both England and Spain playing well below par, the time is perfect to make a visit to Torrevieja’s new Sport City to possibly witness the birth of a new generation of football stars who shall be participating in the first Torrevieja Cup.

The Torrevieja Cup starts on Thursday and features over 60 teams, in all age categories. Keeping up their inauguration a week timetable, Torrevieja’s Mayor, Pedro Hernandez Mateo and Councillor for Sports, Daniel Plaza, will do the honours yet again with the opening of the new football facilities followed by three full days of seven-a-side football games featuring teams from under seven to under eighteen, in both male and female categories, with the finals scheduled for Sunday June 27.

Along with a full complement of Torrevieja CF teams, other top names shall be represented from pro clubs such as Valencia, Elche, Alicante, Cartagena and Sheffield United plus Vallecas CF(Madrid), CD La Granja(Segovia), Nuevo Mejorada(Madrid), Isla Cristina CF de Huelva, las Escuelas Municipales de Ciudad Real, Escuela Futbol Brunete and other local academy teams. The new Rugby field shall revert to Association Football and be home to the ladies tournament, while the six other pitches shall feature all of the boys games.

The Tournament shall also feature a Fan Zone area and special master classes from La Liga professionals including Real Madrid’s reserve goalkeeper Antonio Adan, who shall be giving a class on Saturday morning at the Vincente Garcia Stadium. For those missing their hourly fix of from the World Cup, a big screen is also to be erected so that fans can follow the games including the all important Spain verses Chile match on Friday June 25 at 2030 hrs.

The inaugural Torrevieja Cup is the largest and most ambitious sporting event to the held in the city to date and is organised by professional sports management group Fourgest Sports & Events in collaboration with the Torrevieja Town Hall. Hello, I'm an english coach running an under 18 football team, I'm very interested in the torrevieja cup 2011, I know the area quite well as I have been there on summer holidays, plus due to fly out this year , can you pass my details on and if some one could contact me , would be interested in bringing a team out. thanks Stephen Hird
