Torrevieja just miss out on Kings Cup

On Saturday December 17, Torrevieja have their last home game of the season, against the mighty Barcelona.

REAL MADRID and Barcelona may have been the most watched sporting event in and around Torrevieja over the weekend but of you wanted to savour the atmosphere of a live sporting event, the place to be was watching Torrevieja play Handball. More than any other team in Torrevieja, the electric atmosphere of watching Torrevieja play is something that you have to witness for yourself. The non-stop noise, cheering and action has to be seen live, as the game does not translate well on a TV screen.

At stake, was a possible position as one of the top eight clubs who contest the King’s Cup, a competition that Torrevieja have never qualified for.  Unfortunately Torrevieja came up just short losing against a disciplined Cuenca team who won by 23-25. The home team started badly, going 0-6 down before scoring themselves and the first half always saw Torrevieja coming back at the opposition, often drawing level but never managing to nip in front.

After the break, Torrevieja came out very fast and overturned the two-goal deficit, but again the Ciudad Encantada Cuenca defended well and regained control on the scoreboard, not helped by Torrevieja missing two, one-on-one penalties. A full house of more than 800 supporters crowded into the Cecilio Gallego Pavilion for the game, leaving disappointed with the team unable to qualify for the King’s Cup with only two games left for qualification. However, even if one can’t quite fathom the rules, on Saturday December 17, Torrevieja have their last home game of the season, against the mighty Barcelona, a showcase event that usually attracts TV cameras from around the region and another vocal crowd.
