Full Houses for Torrevieja’s Habaneras

This week’s event has lived up to its promise with some superb vocal work from choirs from the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Full House signs marked the opening nights of the 56th International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony of Torrevieja, as 2,000 plus patrons of the arts made their way to Eras de la Sal to savour the musical feast offered every July in this idyllic setting beside the sea. After the inaugural evening, headlined by local tenor Franciso, which included his excellent version of torrevejense Ricardo Lafuente’s most famous song ‘Torrevieja’, (which brought the house down) the proceedings are well underway. This week’s event has lived up to its promise with some superb vocal work from choirs from the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Habaneras comes to a climax on Thursday July 29 when the finalists sing their hearts out for the judges followed by a more relaxed evening highlighting different styles and performance on the closing night on July 30. For those thinking of taking an evening stroll and maybe stopping in to see what all of the fuss is about, be aware that proceedings don’t start until 2300-hrs and it’s a ticket only affair! So if you’ve always wondered, but never made the effort to go, ensure your entry by picking up one of the few available tickets at the box-office beside the Municipal Theatre.

Torrevieja’s International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony is by far the most famous and best-known cultural event produced by the city. National TV and Radio teams, along with support from Torrveieja TV who stream proceedings on the internet, are all in attendance. Habaneras is the one event that is seen all around Spain on National TV and shown in many other countries of the world.
