From Monday 2nd April, 2007, neighbours of the residential areas of La Siesta, San Luis, El Chaparral and Doña Inés will benifit from free urban transport in the same manner as every other resident of Torrevieja.

An agreement, signed by the Mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernandez Mateo and public transport company, ‘Vega Bus’, will ensure that, as from Monday 2nd April, 2007, neighbours of the residential areas of La Siesta, San Luis, El Chaparral and Doña Inés will benifit from free urban transport in the same manner as every other resident of Torrevieja.

The Mayor explained he has been working for some time to overcome the decision of the courts which had prevented this service and that the lengthy negotiations with the bus company, ‘Vega Bus’ as well as the regional government, had now come to fruition. As from the commencement of ‘Semana Santa’, no Torrevieja resident will be without this important public service.

The town council has agreed an investment of 490,000 euros over the next twelve months (part subsidised by the Generalitat Valenciana) which will lead to a minimum16 hour per day service to cover the 25 kilometre route.

However, the agreement stipulates that ‘Vega Bus’ must ensure that its fleet of buses to be used on the route is improved. Buses should be adapted for disabled users and not be more than six years old. The company will also be obliged to increment the frequency of service during the busiest seasons and at times of local ‘fiestas’ and also open an office for the attention of the public.

Torrevieja’s ‘free urban transport for all’ service is, as far as is known, unique.
