hi there,
looking for a flight in late September or early October , we will be staying in Los Altos, can any one tell us where we can hire bikes from, please.
avatar
M. Wood 11 July, 2014 10:06:02
There is a bike hire shop just along road from Los Altos at La Zenia, just before main roundabout on the main N332 very helpful lady in the shop, spoke
good English.

avatar
zuzana 09 July, 2014 05:21:34
hello. can i hire a bicycle there?
avatar
Graham Richardson 05 July, 2014 04:34:36
There are two bicycle shops on the Avd Rodriguez N332a (coast road) as you enter Torreveija (south)....try those.

Hi All
We are looking into buying a property somewhere in Torrevieja, Just wanted to know about the mosquitos, I have been reading a newspaper article and web pages saying that there has been a big problem with them, Is it just around the lake areas?
Any help appreciated.

Hi I use to eaten by mosquitos but since using skin so soft dry oil spray from Avon for the past 10 years, I've had no problems
avatar
Graham Richardson 05 July, 2014 04:42:52
We are near the salt lake near the N332 and during our 11-year tenancy haven't found it a problem however for those that do you can install cheap but efficient blinds for the windows. When they become problematic the local farm-lands get sprayed. Don't let it put you off!
avatar

Live in Aguas Neuvas not a real problem here
avatar
Janice 03 July, 2014 11:31:08
Hi, I used to suffer terribly when bitten by mosquitos and couldn't visit without getting bitten, but for past few years I have been taking anti-histamines about a week before I travel, I also use deet every night before I go out and so far, touch wood, so good. I might get the odd bite but do not suffer the same reaction. Perhaps it is worse near the lakes but as we are in town I am not sure how bad it would be there. I am sure someone else will be able to help you. J :)
avatar
annette 03 July, 2014 06:14:36
Hi we have owned a house in Torre for 12 years and have never had a problem with Mosquitos. We are not around the salt lakes though xx

Where in the South of the town is the new promenade scheduled? We love our long holiday each Winter and enjoy walking the front each day

Graham Richardson 15 May, 2014 06:05:43
It will commence at Los Naufgros and continue along the beach past El Paraiso, Cala Ferris and down to the Nautilus at Punta Prima. From there you have the promenade down to La Zenia and beyond.
avatar
Gerald Deavers 18 May, 2014 01:18:53
Graham thanks for your post! Do you know when they are to start construction of the promenade? We have a small apt in La Cinuelica and often walk the coast from Punta Prima to Cabo Roig. I'm retiring next year and excited about the prospects of another accessible walkable route. Thanks again-Gerry in Albany NY
avatar
Graham Richardson 20 May, 2014 06:37:05
It is reportedly commencing mid-year 2014, everything is passed with funding in place so we shall see its progress when we arrive again at the latter part of July.
avatar
Jan Jardine 18 May, 2014 08:51:16
Thanks Graham that was a speedy response. We're looking forward to visiting later in the year and taking advantage of the new walking area. Torrevieja has lots to offer and each year it seems to get better and better - we love the new pedestrian area in the town centre too a great investment in the town.
avatar
Graham Richardson 28 April, 2014 01:44:47
Having just spent last week in Torrevieja (and gaining 2-kgs weight) I must congratulate the town on the considerable improvements made since my visit last October. A big 'well done' for the new roads, pavements and flower-beds in our area at Los Naufgros and now the new promenade has been confirmed and ready to start to the south of the town. Despite the austerity measures there is always something new to see as the town becomes increasingly vibrant, Well done to the Keepers and neighbouring bars for their investment on the promenade. Roll on July and August!
avatar
16 May, 2014 01:15:48
It wasn't the town hall that funded the new pavements etc It was an agreement from the company that built the de-salination plant that they repair the roads, pavements etc after all the pipes went in.
avatar
Graham Richardson 18 May, 2014 11:50:53
Then good for them!

We now have better roads and pavements than before (don't quite understand why the new one-way system) but if that's the result of a few years upheaval and disruption then a good job has been done for the benefit of the area.

I'm also pleased to see the emerging land-development opposite La Valetta and Mar Azul with ALDI being the first to invest in a new store....good for them.

I've had a property there for several years and there is lots to see and do but I would definitely say you will need a car to get the full benefit of the area. There is plenty to keep the kids amused and there is always a festival or carnival somewhere nearby. eating out is amazing and there is such a wide variety but make sure you try the Spanish restaurants and Tapas bars, there are loads and all the ones I have been to have been excellent and very welcoming. the beaches in and around torry are spotless, the ones at La Mata and La Zenia probably offer the most in terms of watersports. definitely agree that you should pop in to the Tourist Info Centre - they are very friendly and very knowledgable and are more than happy to provide you with as much information as you need. Enjoy!!! Its a lovely area.
avatar
Tracey Smith 19 May, 2014 07:18:42
I've had an apartment in La Zenia 13 years and don't know of any water sports as it's a small beach. It's a very peaceful beach and considered as a cove
avatar
Graham Richardson 02 May, 2014 09:08:30
Good to hear from you Kimberley. Despite our 11-year tenure and frequent visits we still haven't seen all there is to see however I suggest your first port of call should be to the Tourist Information Office situated at the beginning of the promenade Paseo Vistalegre opposite the Sabadell Band. You will find an abundance of information there, they speak good English and are very helpful. The town beaches are ok but the better ones are to the north and south of the town and I refer to La Mata and La Zenia and beyond. There are a few websites to look at and many videos on YouTube to peruse however you must take your kids on the submarine (free of charge) anchored in the port and used now as a museum. Lots to do and see...have fun!

Hi
torreveija and surrounding areas have many things to offer from dozens of excellent blue flag beaches to many restaurants and bars there is a water park many nice walks and all the usual holiday stuff without the bustle of a large commercial resort. if you want to get around though a car would be very handy

We have been going to Torrevieja this last 8 years and love the area. There is lots to do but you will need a car to make the most of the region. Cartagena in less than a half hour south on a good motorway, Murcia and Elche are well worth a visit as are Rojales, Santa Pola and Guardamar. There are many great restaurants and Bars around the Cabo Roig, Villamartin and Torrevieja Promenade areas. For those shopping days try out La Zenia Boulevard.

Janice Gray 05 April, 2014 03:08:44
Hi,

This is my 10th year here and there are both good and bad things here in Torrevieja.

Paperwork is needed for everything and is a nightmare. The electric is very expensive, second hand Spanish cars are expensive. Interpreters are needed for medical, trafico and the utilities, which we pay for. Tax returns have to be done by solicitors - no popping in to your local Tax Office - and they need paying. The buses only run every 40 minutes if you´re lucky, though if living in Torrevieja itself, a reduced/free bus pass can be obtained.

The good things are the cultural opportunities, and we have 3 great theatres and 1 fabulous auditorium, where we can listen to concerts by some wonderful orchestras and bands, usually for 5 euros or less, up to 25 euros.

The weather is great, but TOO hot in Summer and TOO crowded on the beaches.

As I have no property to go back to, in the UK, it would be difficult for me to return.
avatar
eileen 14 May, 2014 04:04:02
you speak the truth, we have been here over 12 years but now make frequent visits back to UK we find it quite expensive to live full time in torrevieja now. even the banks rip us off. have enjoyed my stay but looking forward to returning full time to england.

You´ll be here for Easter so make sure you attend one of the Easter processions in Torry, either on the Monday before Easter, or Good Friday. The Feria de Mayo will also be on - another highlight of Torry´s cultural events - starting on Wed. 7th May - Sunday 12th
avatar
Marion 27 January, 2014 12:07:26
Hi Janice

Thanks for reminding me about the Easter processions, we missed them last year as I wasn't able to get to them but this year I will certainly make the most of these wonderful sights.
avatar
janice gray 08 February, 2014 06:31:38
Hi Marion,

I actually take part in the Easter processions, Monday the 21st April starts at 10 pm and Good Friday at 8pm, both start promptly (unless threat of rain!) from the main church.

I help carry the first float out, we are dressed in black with white gloves and have the `float` of Jesus at the well, with Mary Magdalene . Hope you enjoy it.
avatar
Marion 09 February, 2014 03:15:31
Look forward to seeing it. Will be so nice to see all the wonderful floats.

Joey, sorry for your loss, I know how difficult it is for you but I think in time you will go back. Your wife will be with you, in your heart. The sunshine will help you to smile again.
avatar
Julie 29 November, 2013 10:08:56
Sorry to hear of your loss, but that area of Spain has a lot to offer and there are some good people there. Listen to the advice given.
avatar
Dick 27 November, 2013 11:39:54
That is so sad. Take time to grieve with family and friends before making any decisions. You may, in time, come back with a friend, and you may find, after "breaking the ice" that your neighbours and friends here will offer the support you need to come again to a place where you and your wife obviously got so much pleasure.
avatar
Julie 29 November, 2013 10:06:08
That is very sound advice you have given. While I haven't personally been in that position, I have friends who have had property in Torrevieja/Quesada who sold when partners became ill and/or died. While it seemed the right decision at the time, they do miss having that base there. Luckily we still have a holiday home and have been able to offer our friends a place to still come to where they had so many happy years.

Torreviaja is a great base for exploring seaside locations in the area reached in one or two hours drive to north and south.

I would recommend setting up with a vehicle and bicycle combination so you can take bikes with you. This means either a larger car or folding bikes.

At almost any destination there are great seaside bike rides on offer.
