If you are going to live in Spain you are obliged to become resident. Telephone system, not a problem, Broadband not a problem, medical benefits depend on your age. If you are a pensioner it's free as in the UK but better as the waiting list are nothing compared to the UK, if you are an early retiree you will need private insurance.

Residencia - I have this as I am resident in Spain for more than six months each year. Possessing this does not mean you have to pay taxes here though.
I had a 'gestor' sort all this out for me and recently my old style card was replaced by a certificate issued by the National Police in Orihuela City. Cost of gestoria was 50 euro. Telephone - when I took possession of my current property, I went to the Telefonica shop next to the church in Torrevieja and they completed the contract. My phone was installed three days later. Broadband - available from Telefonica or from numerous other providers who advertise in the local free press and who often include a call package to allow for certain 'free' calls around Europe if not further afield. Health care - a problem here which may be resolved in January 2009. In my case, I am under 65 and on an occupational pension but not a state 'old age' one and so being a resident of Spain after my first six months (a while ago now for me) the EU 'EHIC' cover ceases. You are then on your own. Either private insurance or 'pay as you go' doctor. In January, the Valencian authorities may be offering a 100 euro a month health stamp for under 65's. We shall watch this space on that. Many in my situation visit the pharmacia, consult there and purchase appropriate medicines over the counter and keep our fingers crossed. I was recently denied treatment at a salud on the basis of having been here over six months but a friendly passing doctor had a word with me, made a recommendation and I then went to the pharmacia. Quite how one manages with children if not paying a Spanish employed/seld employed NI stamp, I do not know. Sign on to the 'Padron' and avail yourself of the many free services that are available to you from your local municipality. How to do this and many othe rhelpful hints are available from the 'HELP' association whose website is below for you. The 'HELP' Charitable Association for ex-pats are very approachable and can literally 'help' and advise in so many ways: Help Association Vega Baja Mr Bill Bridges can advise on the current situation regarding health care and the campaign to have it available to ex - pats. He can be Emailed at: billandpeta@gmail.com One remaining hint - in view of the recent fiasco, don't be too quick to throw good money after television supply. Conduct much research into this before you part with a cent ! Trusting that this assists. Last edited by Mick94 : 09-07-2008 at 06:30 PM. |

Apologies Mick 94 for the name error.
Regards Telefonica, I have visited them near the church in Torrevieja, the monthly charge for broadband and line rental is approximately 60 euros- is there any other providers who don't charge this exhorbitant amount. Can you recommend a good removal company as we have some furniture etc. to bring to Spain. The info on medical was really helpful and will investigate further. Residencia seems to be a quagmire- as I have been given so many variations of how this actually affects oneself regards taxes etc. Many thanks once again Destiny |

Depending where you are you cant get away without this amount as other operators requires a telefonica line. However in most urban areas (torrievieja is covered) the phonestations are upgraded so you can use another operator without having a telefonica line (you will still need a telefonica line in order to get connected to them) So you will only pay the 30-35 € for the adsl. I think Orange is now doing a deal for 20 € a month. Telefonica is doing a deal for 10 € a month. (according to TV advert) Another option is by Radio. then you dont need a phoneline or anything. No idea what the instalation or the monthly cost, nor the speed you can get. You can also choose mobile internet. roughy 30 €/month, for 1 Gb every additional mega will cost you 20 € All operators have more or less the same conditions. Just make sure that you have 3G coverage where you live. |
