¿What do we do with the escritura?

We have paid off our mortgage. We have been to the bank and now we have the escritura. We were told by the bank to take it to the Notary.

¿What documents do we need to take with us to the Notary and what happens to the escritura afterwards?

You will need to take a copy of the Purchase Title Deeds (escritura) and the Mortgage Title Deeds. Should you no have the Mortgage Title Deeds, you can get a land registry search (nota simple) from the Land registry, and then you can ask the notary to prepare the Mortgage Cancelation Deeds.
