  • Hello and a quick question.

    Hi folks,

just joined the forum so thought i'd say hi.

We've recently purchased an apt in Torrevieja centre and hope to get the keys in a couple of weeks time.

We thought about putting a safe in one of the bedroom cupboards. Has anyone else done this or know of anyone who does it and roughly how much this would cost?

    Cheers

    Sean

hi Sean you can pick up a small safe from carrefour for about 29 euro the bigger the safe the dearer. you can fit it yourself easily ,drill rawlbolts and some mega grip/no nails does the job. good luck

      Hi Sean & welcome.

I would not bother putting your safe in a wardrobe, for a start everybody knows where it will be so there is no point hiding it, and the side walls in a wardrobe are the thinnest in an apartment, I would suggest finding a suitable concrete pillar (there's always plenty) and fasten it to that, but where ever you decide to put it always cover the surfaces that will be in contact with floor and walls with (No Nails or sealant) before rawbolting it into position.

I have heard lots of people saying rather than put valuables in a safe you should hide it in different places as long as you remember where it is (e.g. passports in an old sock, cash in a book with some of the pages dug out). That way if you do have a break-in some of it will be safe (sorry for the pun) !. The thieves in Spain seem to be switched on so would probably take the whole safe it is was small enough.

          Regards

          John

Thanks to all for the useful replies.

To answer your question Hanzando, our apartment is Parque De Las Avenidas II, which is located just along from the NIE application office (Plaza del Molino), near Calle Apolo.

Excuse my ignorance, but where is Gardis Civil located?

            Sean.

Hi Dermot, thanks for the reply.

I know it was quoted above re the price of safes from Carefour. I wasn't looking to scrimp on a safe. I was expecting it to be about 50-100 quid to get one fitted. It wouldn't be for valuables per-se, but for passports etc, just what you would put in a safe when you were on a package holiday.

With regards Parque des Avinidas, I will send you a PM.

                  Cheers

                    Sean,
I hope you get to like Parque des Avinidas, myself and wife bought an apartment there over a year and although there have been problems with some undesirables these have been mainly ironed out and my children are just back from a holiday there which they really enjoyed.
                    Dermot,
I see pm's have been disabled, so i'll ask a couple of questions here.

                    What phase are you in?
                    What's the community like?
I saw a new car park has opened underground. Does it cost?
Can you elaborate on the "undesirables" a bit?

                    Cheers

                    Sean

...and these aren't valuables? If you're going to get a safe fitted speak to an expert, or perhaps the local Neighbourhood Watch. As the majority of Spanish walls are not load-bearing the bricks used are hollow and lightweight, and anything bolted to them could be pulled off without too much difficulty. Why not consider getting one sunk into the floor and bolted into the concrete?

Whilst walking in Spain I have, on a couple of occasions, seen discarded safes that have been taken from properties and then opened at leisure once a safe distance away (no pun intended). Don't skimp on security measures - it's a false economy.

                        Chris.

Chris, I know these are valuables, just a play on words.

My plan was to get a safe bolted to the floor (i've normally seen these at the bottom of bedroom cupboards, hence I mentioned that method at the start of this thread).

                          Thanks again for the advice.

                          Cheers

                            Sean,
I am in phase II B of Parque des Avinidas, and it is quite nice.
Sounds like we have purchased in the same phase.

Regarding what the community is like, I cannot really tell because I have not lived often in the apartment. However from what I can gather there are mainly Spanish, Irish, English, Scandanavian and German occupants of the apartmenets and a number of the occupants are full time workers in Spain so late night partying in the apartments by holiday makers or rowdyism coming home in the small hours gets a vist and a finger wagging from the Presidento. This suits me.
I noticed the signs for residents regarding noise etc. Suits me to!

Glad the "undesirables" problem looks to have been rectified!

I pay an annual fee to a friend of mine who resides full time in Torrevieja and he visits the apartment every few weeks, checks the locks and doors, runs the taps, flushes the toilets etc. and makes sure all is in order. He also checks out the apartment when my children are vacating it and reports back to me on its condition and arranges if necessarey for cleaners to come in and spring clean it before we arrive. If you can afford to pay a few hundred euro a year I would recommend that you obtain this type of service also.
Something we are considering and word of mouth is usually the best policy in these cases.

We haven't heard from our solicitor regarding community fees yet. Can you give me an indication of this?

                            Cheers

                            Sean

                              Sean,

You may actually be able to get a safe sunk into the floor. If the safe is then bolted in just below the surface, and the bolts then concreted back over this will provide possibly the strongest installation you can get.

                              Best of luck,

                              Chris.
