  • Educational Help

Hi I am moving to Spain next year with my two children 10 and 14 and have major concerns after what I have read and heard about the education system there for these ages. I have a few more weeks to pull out of my purchase without losing too much money but really need some opinions of you who are living there with children of this age as to whether I am going to hinder their education by moving them to Spain now. We are buying in Algorfa so anyone around that area, please help!!! I am more than willing to pay for their education, but have read some disturbing things even about International Schools. The more opinions the better so if anyone can help whether good or bad, I would rather know now. Many many thanks.

Personally I would not move untill they have both finished school in the UK. My 2 have been in school over here for 3 1/2 years and are fairly fluent in the language. They are now 8 and 7. Your 10 year old may struggle but your 14 year old will detest it. As you say you can pay for private education. Please research this subject before you move. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but put yourself in their shoes, would you be willing to move to a different country where you don't know the language and you certainly don't know anyone?

Both children, particularly the 14 year old are too old to be thrown in the deep end of the Spanish state education system in my opinion. You'll give the eldest almost no chance of getting any qualifications unless he or she is already fluent in Spanish. Your 10 year old is just on the verge of being too old as well, kids seem to do better with the language if they are 8 or under.

I don't know what you've heard about the private schools in the area, but there are several who give a very good level of bi-lingual education, the kids can take IGCSE's at 16 and the International baccelaureate at 18.

Fees are very reasonable compared to private schools in England and most have a GENUINE zero tolerance towards bullying.

The Sierra Bernia School in Alfaz del Pi in Alicante, Newton College in Elche and El Limonar School either in Orihuela Costa or Murcia city are your best choices.

I would say, if you send both to International school you should budget about 1000 to 1200 euros a month for fees, plus school meals, text books, uniform and school trips.

      Good Luck.

        Education Thanks

My thanks for your responses and I guess I already new the answer. Everything is always rosy when you are out there in the sunshine and a different way of life and both kids were very keen but I think may have been blinkered by the prospect of a new house and sunshine. At least I have got basically the same answer from everyone I have spoken to which confirms that I would basically be destroying everything my 14 year old has worked for at school. Thank you again and have a great Christmas.
