  • English Language Television in Spain

The newspapers this week will feature the end days of Telemicro Levante, raided by the Guardia Civil on 12th August for illegal broadcasting and re transmissions and tax offences. The company will be no more.

Tele East has gone and the buzz around the papers is that many more English language TV providers will go the same way.

I contacted Sky direct and the reply I received can be summarised as follows:

No one is allowed to retransmit or transmit Sky channels in Spain no matter what they offer.

To use Sky cards to receive in Spain is unlawful by either companies or individuals and if Sky find out it will cancel the contract and supply.

The BBC channels are free to view BUT if re transmitted by Sky, they cannot be lawfully watched in Spain.

This applies to Sky via digital aerial, satellite or cable. All will go in due course.

Their advice, learn Spanish and watch Spanish TV. It was our choice to live here.

Telemicro have been dodgy for months now and were allowing installation even on the day they were raided.

My advice, read a book for a while or watch videos. Don't throw good money after bad. This may take months to sort out and remember what Sky told me, local offers are not worth the paper they are written on.

If you read the information on the BBC iPlayer - Home by the BBC it pretty much explains why SKY cannot transmit their signals to Europe. When SKY buys the rights to broadcast a football match / soap they only buy the rights to broadcast it within the UK. Since they have no income at all from Spain, why would they (or anyone else) even consider spending money on getting rights to broadcast those programs here? Charity? Don't think so.

Technology is moving fast. Telefonica provides a completely legal alternative with a limited service in English. telefonicaonline.com - Revista Digital Imagenio

In a few years, I imagine that you can subscribe to any tv-program on the internet, paying the rights for it yourself. Also - you can download any program you wish from Thepiratebay.es - La mejor información y recursos sobre descargas peliculas crack keygen serial torrent. ¡Esta pagina está a la venta! (select idioma and set English if you don't understand spanish) - its completely illegal - easy and you can watch the programs uninterrupted without advertisement.

        Where they ever?

I don't think they ever where allowed to show anything but Spanish TV. I would imagine a few of them has their own satellite receivers and their own pirated cards and decoders. I bet they will continue, and I don't think the police will prioritise these yet. After all we are talking about minor crimes, not organising a large scale pirating scam involving 30 - 40 thousand customers paying in money on a monthly basis.

The Big Crackdown on pubs will come soon, but in a different manner. It's a bit beside this tread - but I am not sure if all pubs pay tax and national insurance contribution on all their staff, and definitely not on singers, karaoke shows, bingo-hosts, bookmaking, poker and everything else that is fun.

Those who where complaining about high prices compared to the UK should not be surprised if the cost of going out will increase quite drastically (up to the lever in Alicante and Barcelona) the next few years. Enjoy your cheap drinks, and the fun in the bars while you can. The Wild West is about to be civilized by the tax-man.
