We have recently moved to Spain and are planning to buy business stock and good will from an aquaintance, although they have never been a legally registered business in Spain. We would like to operate the business legally. We need to buy a van and have it sign written etc. We are a bit hesitant in the beginning because we are not sure if the income from the business will be sufficient to cover national insurance, tax, etc. Does anyone know if there are any special circumstances for part time work, or low income.

Also we are a bit worried about being stopped in the van by the Police. Is it best to have the vehicle sign written or not? What do the Police ask for when a car is stopped for a spot check?

    What business is it?

The police if doing spot checks they will usually ask for drivers license. Insurance and ITV (MOT) certificate. (ficha tecnica).
They might check your passport or DNI too.

Probably beneficial to have a car sign written, but dont think that it will matter that much.

you are right to be cautious, buying a business in spain is a difficult decision especially in the current economic climate and buying off an aquaintance can lead to further problems, but if you research as much as you can and get as much info as you can then make the decision.
make sure they have a valid reason to sell, i believe most people who have a good business dont want to sell it (other than moving on to pastures new or health)
Some time ago someone posted on a forum that they had a 'car' sign written and when they took it to be itv'd they had to remove the writting before it would pass.. i cant see this applying to a van though if everything else is legal.
      good luck

Before you worry about signing your van, you need to investigate the costs involved in running the business before you commit yourself - that is if you are dtermined to be legal. If you operate as an autonomo (self employed), the minimum social security contribution is about €256 whatever you earn. To pay soicial security as an on cost is about an additonal 31% on eveerything that is earned - there is no lower limit as there is in the UK. I suggest you go talk to a gestor or assessor about forming a company and then you'll see why so many operate illegally.
