Actually "hambre" is a funny one. You would think it would be masculine as in "el hambre" but it must be feminine which creates a glotal stop - la hambre because it's not "Tengo mucho hambre" it's "Tengo muchas hambre".

Yes hambre is feminine but it is el hambre because you use the masculine "el" before a stressed initial vowel.

(As the "h" is silent the "a" is treated as the initial vowel)

Yep You sure can't make a tortilla without breaking LOS huevos!

Las uvas.
I take it, although it's feminine, it will be el uva? Reason I thought of it is I always used to mix up my huevos and uvas!

Actually. It's correct grammar to use both la mar and El mar.
Don't ask me why. I'm fluent in Spanish but I'm crap in grammar.. In any language I'm afraid.
