Actually, you should have said "Una" palabra and your post should have been "La" mujer. Mine should have been "El" hombre.
If we're learning Spanish, we may as well do it right. I know tons of words and phrases by ear but my spelling is often pretty crap!

It is tengo mucha hambre.

Yes hambre is feminine but it is el hambre because you use the masculine "el" before a stressed initial vowel.

(As the "h" is silent the "a" is treated as the initial vowel)
