I use a Kyokushin dojo at the Golden Gym and they are very good also. All in Spanish which keeps me on my toes.

Hi beastess, I remember sparing with you at La Florida last year; are Beast and beastlet still training? I enjoy all the pinan catas, kushanku etc that we practise at Wado, its a lot more stimulating than the streach and bash each other that we had in La Florida. How do you find your style? John.

Yes, we are both still training but in separate classes in the Golden Gym in Torrevieja. We do katas in this new style too and I have to say my Spanish teacher´s Japanese accent is a lot better than my first teacher´s was. Kyokushin is an interesting style but not everyone´s cup of tea. It is aimed at developing personal strength and is therefore one of the better styles for fighting. I think the La Florida lessons with my second teacher - the ones you joined - helped me lose fear of fighting so stood me in good stead in some ways but I got bored with the lack of tradition and my son hated not being able to grade. Kyokushin is much tougher than other forms. I read the blackbelt exam rules for Kyokushin and they are more than twice as tough as others. Other types mostly fight ten people in their exam. In Kyokushin it´s twenty-five and some of the fighting blindfolded. My husband has occasionally watched from a corner and says even seeing five minutes makes him tired. We do hundreds of press-ups and sit-ups. I´ve been doing it a year now and really love it. Have got much stronger as a result. You do cop the odd bruise though. You tend to do exercises hitting and kicking each other rather than punch bags - all designed to toughen up. Most of the men I train with including the teacher are all young enough to be my son. There were two other women but they fled. A young girl joined last night -hope she lasts. Our teacher is only first Dan but third in Spain at his style. He competed in the world championships last year. He´s amazingly strong and has a very nice sense of humour. My class and my son´s are half Spanish half Eastern European. The Lithuanians and Russians are so tough. One of the Lithuanians was sending me flying until I found his weak spot. The Russian kids are a bit naughty about kicking in the groin so I had to buy my son a special guard. It´s now a treasured possesssion as it has saved him so much pain! I think it is actually quite a good idea to train with Eastern Europeans because they really do seem to have a strong fighting spirit. It´s amazing seeing some of these really small kids aged 5 or 6 going at it like pit bulls. The English kids I knew from previous classes had very balletic kicks but were much politer and I think I might not fancy their chances in a street fight.

Its good that you are injoying your karate Bestess; kyokushnkai is a very hard form of karate, and being full contact it is not to everyones taste. I studied kyokushnkai at both Wimbledon and Caerphilly/Cardiff for over twelve years mainly under shif/Costa and B Greardon. I then joined the Jutsu kai form, which was a breakaway style based on kyokushnkai, and they also have 25 bouts (continuious, full contact) an belive me you then come to understand why the fitness training and exercise is so intense at the dojo; (you really need it). All styles of karate, (if taught properly) are benefical for defence in most situations. The whole idea is to injoy your sport and put 100% in and you will always get 100% returned.
I think you are very brave attempting karte in Spanish though; I speak the language fairly well but I am not sure I could streach to that, well done you.
For me Wado Ryu has proved to be the style for me, possibly after all these years the old bones wont take the knocks anymore. John.
