car tax

My car has tax which expires this month. Can someone please tell me how I renew the tax, where I go and what documents etc? Any info greatfully received.

I have been informed (correctly or in-correctly ) that a letter will be sent and you go to the bank or Suma and pay it.
It may not arrive for a while as it is done in alphabetical order but the payment is back dated to the expiry.
I hope this info is correct but who knows !!!!!
