  • Dog behaviourist?

    Hi!
Does anyone know of a good dog "whisperer"/behaviourist in the Torrevieja area? We have a very very nervous dog - she's afraid of fireworks, cars backfiring etc etc, and sometimes the most ordinary noises like closing a door can spook her. It is so sad to see and we can do nothing to calm her down. We have tried to calmly talk to her and we have also tried to ignore her (very difficult to do) - absolutely everything! We have tried herbal medication and drugs prescribed by the vet too.

Have you tried the big pet shops/vets, they may have notice boards with adverts displayed. It's horrible when your dogs are scared of fireworks, not so bad if you know its going to be on a certain date, you could sedate them but here in Spain they go off all the time. Hope you get her sorted.

      Dog behaviourist

      Hi Chris,
Thanks for your help. I have been in contact with my vet as he is a gem, but he doesn't really know anyone.
I will check the larger pet stores and see what they have on their noticeboards.
Thanks again and good luck tomorro!

Thanks a million for that "Julskin". I will try and get that book as I haven't heard about that particular one. Have read others, but they have been no good.

Just found this in todays Telegraph:-
"Sounds Scary" is a CD-based therapy product (from Sound Therapy 4 Pets - Sound Therapy 4 Pets) that is recommended by the RSPCA and has been shown to be effective in treating noise phobias such as fireworks, thunder and gunshots. The CDs are played at a low volume, gradually increasing over time, allowing dogs gradually to become accustomed to frightening noises.

It is important to stick to the training programme that accompanies the CDs. The reaction to the flashes should be reduced as your dog becomes less afraid of the sounds.

              Hi Chris,
Thanks for your help - just been to my news agent to get a copy of the Telegraph myself, but he didn't have any left. Do you get the Cd's free in the paper or where do you get them from? Sorry to hassle you for more details, but I am willing to try anything - because it is terrible to see how frightened she looks/gets.

I was checking the Telegraph on-line and saw the article, have a look at the website for this product which is Sound Therapy 4 Pets - Sound Therapy 4 Pets, it will tell you about it and also the price. It was just a letter somebody had written asking for advice for a scared dog etc, unfortunately the CD didn't come free. Good luck.

Caeser Millen is good for very out of control dogs not a diog thats very nervous, try Victoria Stillwell "Its Me or the Dog" very good read indeed and to try and calm him down try Dorwest Valerian compound *like valium for dogs* but not as harsh and totally hebal.

                    Dog behaviourist

                    Hi!
Thanks so much for your reply today. My dog is doing so much better after we bought some passion flower tabs (totally herbal) which she gets in the afternoons. She is an old lady, and I guess her hearing is going too so a great many things may seem louder and therefore startles her from time to time. But she is doing better and I am very grateful for all of the replies I have had.
                    Cheers.

Lotte, glad to hear you pooch is doing better.
Where did you get the herbal tablets from?? I am fostering a dog for APAH and he has terrible seperation anxiety and would like to see if they work for him.
I'm also looking for training books DVD's for clicker training. Has anyone seen any locally??
                        Thanks in advanced.
                        Jules

Hi Lotte, Maybe I can help, I am not an animal psych, (qualified) but have two rescued dogs who are now completely balanced (1 took nearly two years) and I work with my neighbours dogs and have had untold success, I have been an avid follower of Mr Milan for some years and find both his techniques and those of Stanley Coren, author of The Language of Dogs as my guidelines. let me know if you are interested, I live inland a little about 30 mins from torre.

I can highly recommend a lady called Justine, she is an ex MOD dog handler and a specialist in dog psychology. Even though the problem with my dog is very different from yours I think she may be able to help you. I adopted a 7 month old rescue dog a month ago and he was so aggressive to everyone and every dog we met, I really did not know how I was going to cope with him. It was just basically nervous aggression and the help I have received from Justine has meant he is now a much happier and calmer dog and I am in control. I have been attending her dog training classes at Pueblo Principe in Villamartin but Justine also does home visits, her phone number is 626259524
Good luck and I hope you find help for your dog soon
